Annually, we take 2-4 apprentices to take part in an 8-month apprenticeship program to learn all aspects of running a direct-marketed, small diversified farm. From March through October, apprentices work alongside maverick farmers to plant, care for, and market the 3-acre market garden at Maverick Farms.
The apprenticeship program is a volunteer opportunity with room and board offered along with the educational opportunity. We see apprentices as an integral part of our farm, not only as a source of labor but also as a source for innovation, rejuvenation, and excitement, and to that end the apprenticeship is a focused and participatory educational opportunity.
We expect apprentices to have a desire to learn, work, and (hopefully!) enjoy life on the farm. We typically work 9-5 Monday through Friday and rotate responsibilities for Saturday markets. Farm work can be extremely taxing both mentally and physically and requires long hours in the sun, rain, and occasionally, snow. Apprentices must be able to work in all kinds of weather. and must be able to lift 50 pounds. All apprentices are expected to have a strong work ethic, a dedication to food and farming, and ability to communicate and work cooperatively with others.
Apply by sending a resume, cover letter, and the apprenticeship application. I strongly encourage interested applicants to visit Maverick Farms before applying, call or email to set up a time to visit or show up for one of our Maverick Monday volunteer days (March-October).
